The Dance Centre’s popular Discover Dance! noon hour series features Vancouver’s spectacular aerial dance company, Aeriosa. Bringing together the athleticism of rock climbing and the grace and artistry of dance, Aeriosa uses rope rigging systems to create unique three-dimensional performances that re-interpret gravity, unlock new movement possibilities, and inspire audiences. Choreographer and Artistic Director Julia Taffe introduces a program of theatre-based work and provides revealing insights into this exciting dance genre.

Vancouver-based Aeriosa was founded by Julia Taffe in 2001. The company’s artistic objectives include creating dance in non-traditional environments, exploring aerial choreography and revealing dance in the vertical realm to new audiences. The company combines contemporary dance technique with expert knowledge of safe rope rigging systems to create performances that re-interpret gravity and respond to the performance location. Its artists train in the mountains where they dance on sheer rock walls, while in urban environments their site-specific performances take place in theatres and plazas - and on walls, ledges and city rooftops. Aeriosa made its debut in 2001 at the opening of Scotiabank Dance Centre, and since then has performed at the Vancouver Public Library, the Vancouver Building, and at many other locations locally, across North America and internationally. In 2016 Taffe was named as a KSF Artist of Choice by the Kevin Spacey Foundation.
