The November edition of The Dance Centre’s popular Discover Dance! noon hour series features the innovation and dynamism of contemporary dance, with a performance by the response. Led by Artistic Director Amber Funk Barton, the company blends contemporary techniques with the physicality and attitude of urban culture, forging an immediate emotional connection with audiences through its energetic dancers and exciting music. This performance will feature a selection of works, plus a sneak preview of an upcoming premiere.
Founded in 2008 by Amber Funk Barton, the response. is a project-based contemporary dance company dedicated to challenging how dance is made, shown and perceived. The response. focuses on the articulation of contemporary technique with the dynamics of urban dance and culture. Inspired by the ability of the human body, its physical potential and its emotional make-up, the company goes beyond the focus of form to create cinematic experiences using the body to create pictures, images and shapes to evoke reaction. Barton trained at Goh Ballet, Arts Umbrella and the Ballet BC Mentor Program, and has danced and choreographed for many Vancouver-based companies. She was the inaugural recipient of The Dance Centre’s Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award in 2005. Works she has created for the response. include The Art of Stealing, Hero & Heroine, Portraits and Scenes of Female Creatures, and RISK. Her work has been presented in several venues and festivals in Vancouver, throughout BC, Ottawa, St. John's and in Seattle, WA at On the Boards. In 2014, Barton received a prestigious commission resulting in the co-production with the National Arts Centre of Surrender, a solo that premiered in Ottawa at the NAC. www.responsedance.com
