SUMMARY:Aeriosa Dance Society
DESCRIPTION:In Salmon Cycle\, choreographer Julia Taffe and her Aeriosa team work technical rigging magic to evoke a beautiful floating journey into the mysterious underwater environs of Pacific Salmon. This piece contemplates and celebrates the extraordinary lives of five keystone species which are foundational to terrestrial\, aquatic and cultural ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest. \nCome join Aeriosa dancers Cara Siu\, Meghan Goodman\, Alex Tam and Juan Duarte for a 15-minute performance excerpt from Salmon Cycle that Aeriosa will also be presenting at the San Francisco Aerial Arts Festival August 16 and 17\, 2024. \nFollowing the excerpt the dancers will share a movement sketch exploring how Salmon Cycle’s counterweight rigging design combines with contact improv to magnify movement trajectories. \nTo complete the showing\, artistic director Julia Taffe will lead a conversation with the dancers and the audience about the Salmon Cycle creative process. \nMasks are welcome\, and will be available for audience members at the door. \nGenerously supported by The Dance Centre (www.thedancecentre.ca) through Special Projects and Partnerships

SUMMARY:Vancouver Tap Dance Society
DESCRIPTION:This incredible night of Tap Dance is split between the virtuoso debut of original work by the Tap Artistry ensemble and contributions from extraordinary performers and groups in Western Canada’s dance community. \nTap Artistry: This suite is a daring piece of dynamic physical and rhythmic storytelling. The performers in this creative collaboration of emerging artists explore their interperative perspectives on the original and remixed versions of music that inspires them and is woven together by the dancers’ pursuit of collective expression. \nTheir inner connection to the dance equals their outward connection to each other\, and thereby their connection with you the audience. With the contrast of deeply felt high-energy musicality\, A Capella voicings and gently gliding soft-shoe pieces\, this suite will take your breath away! \nThe community portion of this show is a celebration of inspired young dancers from Western Canada and the extraordinary work they have achieved.

SUMMARY:Vines Art Festival
DESCRIPTION:In this global seismic reshake\, we are reminded that there is no beginning or end; but cycles and storms that our ancestors and grandchildren will have to weather. Time brings us to a reality that feels more like dystopia and we are left to question how we build\, learn\, grow\, tend\, dream and heal through such darkness. As Vines approaches its tenth anniversary we ask artists to consider fulfilling ways of being\, stories and ritual from the past as a means for building a present and future that is more habitable. We ask artists to share and challenge the lore of their lineages. We invite artists to sit in a Utopia outside of colonialism to question their morality\, our collective humanity\, what we will leave behind and who will have access to it. We call on artists to (re)imagine\, (re)generate\, (re)create our fifth earth through song\, dance\, poetry\, storytelling and visual arts. \nFull schedule and details.

SUMMARY:Vancouver Tap Dance Society
DESCRIPTION:Jason Samuels Smith\, Joel Hanna\, Jessie Sawyers\, Riley Skworoda\, and Jeffrey Dawson come together for this very special presentation that shares performances by and conversations with some of the most extraordinary dancers in the world who\, at different places in their lives/careers\, are asked the very abstract question “what if you could do that one again?” \nWe’ve all felt what it’s like to walk away from something; a conversation\, a project\, or an encounter thinking ” I wish I just…”. For dancers\, leaving a stage that way is a kind of torture we put on ourselves. But it is also the sentiment that drives us to practice and pursue that perfect expression. \nSo\, what if they had another chance? What would they do differently and why? What happened? Was it external circumstances or was it internal? \nCome witness the insight into the hearts and minds of the long time professionals and virtuoso outliers\, with their stories of struggle\, perseverance and triumph from voices not typically heard. Then translated into the language that they express themselves with the loudest… Tap Dance. \nWith a live band (The Dean Thiessen Trio)\, hosted by Joel Hanna\, and danced with joyfully open hearts\, let us give you a wonderful night of incredible dance\, wonderful music\, stories and copious amounts of laughter. \nlet us dance for you.
