SUMMARY:The Biting School
DESCRIPTION:We are sitting in the madness of the human experience.\nForgetting we are the guests that the daffodils invited in a long time ago.\nWe are sitting in stillness and finding the trails.\nThe trails that will eventually take us home. \nEmpty-Handed is a contemporary dance piece that explores the journeys of five cosmic characters through themes of darkness\, deception\, and greed.\nThrough expressive movement\, choreography and storytelling\, the dancers create a world that transcends time and culture. Each character guides the viewer through an emotional arc that honours the essence of their personal revolution. \nThe Firehall Arts Centre presents The Biting School in their premiere production of EMPTY-HANDED. In this new work\, choreographer Arash Khakpour and his company conjure up images of everyday life that transcend cultural and historical boundaries.

SUMMARY:Anusha Fernando/Shakti Dance
DESCRIPTION:Sky Dancers emerged from a year-long gathering of six outstanding Bharata Natyam dance artists\, who formed a unique collaborative space to explore the core elements of the form: stillness\, presence\, energy\, musicality\, ritual\, and stories. Using the framework of the Dakini (Sky Dancer)\, a Buddhist symbol of the dynamic play of energy in the universe\, the choreography expresses both the dancers’ personal voices and the rich traditions and meditative practices that have emerged from India. \nConceived and directed by Anusha Fernando\, Sky Dancers is performed by Arno Kamolika\, Kiruthika Rathanaswami\, Malavika Santhosh\, Ashvini Sundaram and Sujit Vaidya\, joined on stage by musicians and meditators/chanters. \nPost-show artist talkback October 5.

SUMMARY:Dancers of Damelahamid
DESCRIPTION:Raven Mother is the Dancers of Damelahamid’s newly choreographed dance work in honour of late Elder Margaret Harris (1931 – 2020). Raven Mother illustrates the vast impact Elder Harris had on the revitalization of Indigenous dance along the Northwest Coast. This work illuminates the profound leadership of our mothers\, their essential contribution in this resurgence\, and the force and transformation of this awakening. \nThis is the Dancers of Damelahamid’s most ambitious production and will be the culmination of generations of artistic and cultural work.  Movement\, song\, regalia\, sculpture\, and design\, are interwoven with an embodied narrative that speaks to our current realities\, drawing from a rich lineage of teachings and insights. Raven Mother is a tangible remembrance of a woman’s spirit\, marking the shift between generations that has sparked a new role for our daughters as the force to hold their grandmother’s vision.

SUMMARY:Nate Yaffe/Le Radeau
DESCRIPTION:Created through radical trust in the body\, faith hole choreographs itself through the unconsidered movements that rip through the artist. \nGoing relentlessly forward\, always embracing its future iteration\, dismissing nostalgic lingerings of “self”\, yet exposing the splinters of personhood to the public. In this solo work\, Nate Yaffe cultivates a non-transactional exchange between performer and audience\, offering himself as an open orifice spilling fleshy histories with unguarded emotion and humour. By excavating muscle memories as artifacts from a history of conditioning through classical dance training\, internalized hetero-masculine values\, and restrained hyperactivity\, Nate Yaffe strives to reveal the innately queer vocabulary that lives beneath. \nPresented by Plastic Orchid Factory \n  \n
