SUMMARY:Andrea Peña
DESCRIPTION:Visceral\, transgressive and magnetic\, BOGOTÁ constructs a brutalist landscape out of choreography inspired by Colombia’s political and spiritual heritage. With striking intensity\, nine performers chronicle transformations between chaos and rebirth\, incarnating the tensions of ever-unfolding and turbulent histories. \nPresented by PuSh International Performing Arts Festival and New Works Dance

SUMMARY:Katie Ward
DESCRIPTION:Katie Ward seeks to activate both the audience’s imagination and her own as a performer. Her movement score uncovers states\, identities and forms housed in her own body archive. For their part\, the spectators are invited to speak at different moments of the performance\, guided by a score: after the performer has revealed a fact about herself to the microphone\, the boom operator approaches each spectator with a microphone and invites them to do the same. The scores of movements and the words of the audience evolve in parallel\, intertwining\, creating a constantly changing composite – a kind of dream bath. \nCo-produced by Festival TransAmériques + La Chapelle Scènes Contemporaines + La Rotonde and presented by Plastic Orchid Festival.

SUMMARY:Lucy M. May
DESCRIPTION:Can feeling be a way of knowing? An excerpt from Lucy M. May’s new hybrid exhibition and performance conceived for an art gallery. Masterful improvisers reach into the sensory present\, prying open channels between the bewildering envelope of the world and wild inner landscapes. Surrounded by visually stunning images of Wolastokuk/New Brunswick\, The Conditions unfurls in part from Lucy M. May’s embodied search for a spiritual connection to their homeland whilst facing a settler-colonial lineage. Created in collaboration with dancer-filmmakers Fran Chudnoff and Ja James Britton Johnson\, shadow theatre artist Maisie O’Brien\, and musicians Patrick Conan and Amy Macdonald\, the artists invite you to sink into the intimacy of a contained space. Beneath concrete foundations\, the bedrock shifts.

SUMMARY:Compagnie Marie Chouinard
DESCRIPTION:Choreographer Marie Chouinard presents two unorthodox performances that mark pivotal moments in her trailblazing career\, both inspired by iconic Ballets Russes masterpieces by Vaslav Nijinsky. The original works were revolutionary for their departure from classical ballet\, and Chouinard extends their avant-garde impact\, reimagining them through her contemporary lens and transforming each into a viscerally provocative experience. \nPresented by PuSh International Performing Arts Festival and Chilliwack Cultural Centre

SUMMARY:Daina Ashbee
DESCRIPTION:Daina Ashbee’s radical works sit at the edge of dance and performance. Still only in her early thirties\, she has garnered major awards and critical acclaim\, and her bold\, utterly unique creations are shown all over the world. We learned a lot at our own funeral is a compelling new work which probes the notion of death. Enveloping the audience in a potent sense of ritual\, it evokes a battle with the self: the dancer challenges gravity\, resists the ground\, overcomes precarious balances. Finally\, only the echo of the body\, of its strength and fragility\, remains. \nPost-show artist talkback February 7. \nPROGRAM

DESCRIPTION:The world’s foremost all-male comic ballet company returns to Victoria with its internationally beloved troupe of dancers as part of a landmark 50th anniversary season\, featuring gems from across the company’s ground-breaking repertoire. The company dances en travesti with razor-sharp wit and breathtaking pointe work\, performing polished parodies of works that span the classical ballet canon. Revered by ballet aficionados (as well as by those who don’t know a plié from a jeté)\, the Trocks will delight people who know nothing about ballet as much as it will enchant seasoned ballet lovers.

SUMMARY:Chimerik 似不像
DESCRIPTION:Inner Sublimity traverses currents of Eastern and Western philosophy through dance\, creating a dynamic dialogue between traditions preserved across generations. This cross-pollination bridges Taiwan’s heritage\, grounded in reverence and ritual\, with Europe’s tapestry of religious practices\, carving an artistic approach that challenges colonial narratives and enriches contemporary explorations of spirituality. \nPresented by PuSh International Performing Arts Festival and Vancouver Art Gallery

SUMMARY:Shamel Pitts | TRIBE
DESCRIPTION:A trio of Black performers shares the stage in a narrative of unity\, vigor\, and unrelenting advancement. Their journey originates in the darkness of the titular BLACK HOLE\, understood not as a cosmic void but a metaphorical place of transformation and potential. Engulfed in an evocative soundscape of original music\, sound samples\, and spoken word\, the dancers embark on an hour-long\, uninterrupted journey in movement in which their tenacity and grace are emphasized by cinematic video projections and stark\, monochromatic lights.

SUMMARY:Sankofa Danzafro
DESCRIPTION:“Dance is a voice in favor of equity. It helped us survive in times of slavery. It was our voice when we were denied the word. It became a narrative\, a memory and a hope for the future.” – Rafael Palacios\, choreographer \nCreated in celebration of Colombia’s 159th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery\, The City of Others takes apart the country’s history and culture to examine its complex and often agonizing past. \nFor thousands of people\, cities can be a place of hostility\, loneliness\, and discrimination. Palacios believes that for life to be positive and constructive for collective communities\, it is necessary to embrace the extended family concept prevalent in rural communities: what I own is for everyone; under my roof\, there is room for someone else. \nWith the second largest Afro-descent population in Latin America\, Colombia’s diasporic communities have suffered discrimination and inequality. In The City of Others\, twelve dancers and musicians occupy the stage\, laying claim to political and social power\, reconstituting the theatrical space as a site of democracy\, equality\, and wholeness. This is their city – it is everyone’s city. \nPresented by DanceHouse with community partners Blackout Art Society and the Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre
