SUMMARY:Anne Plamondon Productions
DESCRIPTION:Myokine is inspired by molecules released by the muscles during physical effort\, associated with the regeneration of body and mind. The piece explores the connection between movement\, hope\, urgency\, and resilience\, while revealing how light and shadow respond to\, oppose\, and nourish each other. In a world sometimes perceived as dark\, the choreography draws luminous bursts that can only exist at the heart of darkness. \nThe performers become architects\, protectors\, and messengers of a vital breath\, seeking and sharing moments of clarity that pierce the gloom. For Anne Plamondon\, these “molecules of hope” embody the body’s and dance’s salvatory role in the face of our era’s upheavals. Movement becomes an outlet\, a place to welcome our vulnerabilities and transform them into a shared strength.

SUMMARY:Katria Phothong-McKinnon
DESCRIPTION:Impetus is an interdisciplinary installation that explores identity\, digital existence and cultural preservation through the meeting points of classical Thai dance\, Voguing\, w*acking and new media. At the heart of the work are two 16 x 16 x16 LED matrix cubes: one manufactured\, embodying a digital record of movement\, the other hand soldered\, symbolizing presence beyond what is seen and the hidden labour behind technology. Together\, they aim to reveal and explore how cultural and human experiences are fragmented\, mediated\, and constrained within digital and non digital systems. \nVisitors are welcome to drop in at any time and stay as long as they wish. The installation runs on a 10-minute loop. Capacity in the space is limited. Depending on attendance\, there may be a short wait. \nArtist Talk with Katria Phothong-McKinnon facilitated by Sophia Mai Wolfe Wednesday November 19 | 7.30-8.30pm.

SUMMARY:Audrey Gaussiran
DESCRIPTION:Alliance Française Vancouver presents: \nCombining dance and digital art\, MOSAÏCO explores the multiplicity in identity construction. This piece is performed by 5 dancers\, primarily from culturally diverse backgrounds. They support the theme with a mixed and rhythmic gestural vocabulary. Their movements influence a highly reactive digital projection in the background: the appearance\, transformation\, or decomposition of a textured mosaic changes with the performers’ gestures.

SUMMARY:Omer Backley-Astrachan and Jana Castillo
DESCRIPTION:Chutzpah! presents the North American premiere of Common Place by Australian power-duo dancer/choreographer Omer Backley-Astrachan and multi-award winning dancer Jana Castillo. Drawing on folkloric vernacular\, this work evokes something that unites us all – the communal power of dance and movement. \nCommon Place is a physical exploration of belonging and togetherness\, shared action\, and collaboration. This intimate duet will invite audiences into a quiet and potent reflection on connection. \nArts Hub Australia calls Common Place an “intoxicating and moving piece…about connecting through a rite\, a ritual and a celebration.” Come become a part of that celebration with us. \nFollowing the performance\, a facilitated discussion with Omer\, Jana and Naomi Brand will take place at The Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery.

SUMMARY:Hung Dance
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dance House Vancouver with community partner Asian-Canadian Special Events Association \nCreatures of a feather dance together in Birdy\, Hung Dance’s call to the wild. \nEmploying a head piece called “Ling Zi” that incorporates pheasant tail feathers worn in traditional Chinese opera to represent warrior’s power and skill\, Birdy offers up a magpie creation\, concretizing bright bursts of freedom against the weighted cage of history. \nFounded in 2017 by choreographer Lai Hung-Chung\, Hung Dance’s choreographic vocabulary is drawn from martial arts\, Peking opera\, and traditional cultural symbols. Through the prism of performance\, Taiwan’s complex history and political status metamorphize into a thrilling new dance language. \nThe calligraphic eloquence of four-feet long feathers moves from gentleness to violence\, transforming into spears\, whips\, and a blade drawn sharply across the throat. Whether extending the body into space\, wriggling in earnest writing\, or offering a gossamer caress\, the feathers function as a form of punctuation\, leading and echoing movement phrases with the expressive vitality of living things. \nAs the dancers flock together in rippling patterns of conformity and divergence\, rituals of behaviour gleaned from the non-human world\, find their choreographic counterparts. Group think meets the defiance of individual identity\, as self-policing roots out any opposition. What emerges in the tightrope struggle is a universal cry for freedom.
