SUMMARY:Harmanie Rose
DESCRIPTION:  \nDisabled choreographer Harmanie Rose explores distance and connection through the Zoom box. The box is all the barriers\, like distance\, chronic fatigue\, and pain\, and also how disabled artists innovate together. Even when we are in separate spaces\, our shared attunement and connection remain the center of the work.  \nWorking with access artists Kelsie Acton and Colin van Uchelen\, she weaves a web of embedded description that makes the performance accessible to blind and sighted audience members from its inception.  \nPhotos by Chris Randle\nSupported through the Artist-in-Residence program.

SUMMARY:Indian Summer Festival
DESCRIPTION:  \nIndian Summer Festival presents its 16th annual celebration of South Asian arts with a lineup of evocative mixed programming—including comedy\, live music\, theatre\, literature\, and interdisciplinary exchange\, from July 9–19\, 2026 at various venues across Vancouver\, Burnaby\, and Surrey. \nThe festival’s 2026 theme\, Ragas for a Ruptured World\, is a call to artistic expression\, creative defiance\, and collective meaning in an increasingly fractured world. The program features more than 90 Canadian and international artists\, including Sri Lankan comedian Vidura Bandara Rajapaksa\, acclaimed singer-songwriter Rashmeet Kaur\, and filmmaker Julian Brave NoiseCat\, co-director of the Academy Award–nominated documentary Sugarcane. Festival-goers can also enjoy free performances\, exhibitions\, and community events\, including a performance from Gong Library\, video works by Farheen Haq\, and the festival’s closing celebration—Rishta\, an evening of poetry and live music. SUMMARY:32nd Annual Wreck Beach Butoh
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrom July 3rd to July 16th\, 2026\, Kokoro Dance presents the 32nd annual Wreck Beach Butoh Performance Workshop. This intensive two-week butoh workshop led by Kokoro Dance’s Artistic Directors\, Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi\, and is open to anyone over the age of 18. \nThe performances on July 15th and 16th take place\, in the nude\, on Wreck Beach at the foot of the #4 Trail below the UBC Museum of Anthropology. A maximum of 30 participants will be accepted into the workshop. The workshop takes place weekdays from 9:00am-4:00pm daily at the KW Production Studio. Participants should bring comfortable exercise clothing\, a water bottle\, and towel. No previous dance experience or exposure to butoh is required\, but the intensive is physically challenging. If you want to participate\, it is advisable to come to Kokoro’s ongoing dance classes or find physical conditioning elsewhere. \nStarting from day one of the workshop\, we will build a butoh score built on interior imagery that will create both an individual and a group journey\, 60 to 70 minutes in length. It will be performed on sand and in water whether it is sunny or rainy on Vancouver’s largest stage with lighting\, set\, sound\, and costumes by Mother Nature. Kokoro Dance’s Wreck Beach Butoh experience is a life-altering opportunity to discover your own original dance expression. \nMore info.
