Endowments and Funds

Create a long-term legacy for dance.

The Grant Strate Endowment Fund

Grant Strate was a pioneer and visionary, a longstanding member of the dance community, philanthropist, choreographer, mentor, supporter of young dance artists, and one of the visionaries behind the project we know today as Scotiabank Dance Centre.

After Grant passed away in 2015 he bestowed upon The Dance Centre a tremendous legacy through the Grant Strate Endowment Fund, which we continue to build upon with the support of Canadian Heritage, Vancouver Foundation, and generous donors. The Fund provides much-needed support for subsidized studio space and professional development opportunities for artists, program areas close to Grant’s heart, along with equipment for and maintenance of the building. We are honoured and inspired by the legacy Grant left, enabling us to support our diverse dance community.

Lola MacLaughlin Endowment Fund and Award

The Lola MacLaughlin Memorial Fund and Award were established in 2009 to honour the achievements and memory of the much-loved choreographer and Artistic Director Lola MacLaughlin. The biennial Lola Award is designed to encourage and facilitate the work of senior and mid-career choreographers.

Tony Giacinti and Lola’s friends and colleagues have generously contributed to the Lola MacLaughlin Memorial Fund held at the Vancouver Foundation, and matched by Canadian Heritage’s Endowment Incentives Component of the Canada Cultural Investment Fund.

Tony Giacinti and The Dance Centre have ambitious goals to grow the Fund to increase its capacity to foster the growth of choreographers.

Jarislowsky, Fraser Limited is proud to support The Dance Centre through its membership to the Corporate Leader’s Circle. Membership has provided fantastic benefits ranging from tickets to exclusive performances to the use of studios and the rooftop terrace for private events. As Chair of the fundraising committee, I have met a number of the dance professionals that utilize The Dance Centre's services and I am truly amazed by the work they produce thanks in part to the funds provided by the Corporate Leader’s Circle.

- Beau Howes, Jarislowsky, Fraser Limited

The Dance Centre, as a building and an organization, has been and continues to be, a powerful inspiration and a support to dance artists in this city. The Dance Centre has been seminal to my work as a creator, by commissioning it, presenting it, and exposing me to the work of other artists. From the beginning, it created a hub, a place where dance artists feel valued. The importance of this cannot be overstated.
