SUMMARY:Hillel Kogan
DESCRIPTION:We Love Arabs dives into the toughest of questions – how can we co-exist within conflict? Somewhere in Tel Aviv\, a Jewish choreographer enlists an Arab dancer to help create a work that will carry a message of peace. But as the work progresses\, power struggles ensue; bodies resist control. Skewering choreographic fads\, unconscious bias and misplaced good intentions\, the piece unfolds as a corrosively funny takedown of politics\, ethnic stereotypes\, and contemporary dance itself. Hillel Kogan is one of Israel’s most successful choreographers\, blending biting political and social commentary with a highly physical movement language\, and this award-winning work has been a hit on stages all over the world. \nPost-show talkbacks April 14 (French) and 15 (English). \nWORKSHOP

SUMMARY:Choreography Workshop with Hillel Kogan
DESCRIPTION:Israeli choreographer Hillel Kogan brings together the materials of his creations in a process that begins with improvisation. He is intrigued by the meeting of virtuosic movement and improvisation using text\, writing and vocalization: performative tools for observing social and political phenomena. He questions conventions regarding the stage and the dance form\, choreographic methods and processes\, dancers and the act of dancing. This workshop will experiment with the tools he draws upon during the creative process\, extracting strategies and applying to them new content that is relevant to the participants: questioning the medium itself and the artistic and social conventions surrounding spoken word and body. \nThis workshop is designed for professional dance artists and choreographers. \n

SUMMARY:Daina Ashbee
DESCRIPTION:The first group piece by the prolific Daina Ashbee\, J’ai pleuré avec les chiens (TIME\, CREATION\, DESTRUCTION 2021) plunges into states of being with both sober and incisive precision. Far from any possible attempts at categorization or binary representation\, the naked and gaping bodies pierced by chants attempt to come closer together\, pile up in vanishing lines – before breaking apart. Connection then emerges\, in poetics of deflagration and trance\, while the sounds produced by the bodies generate movements\, growls\, yelps\, cries and calls. True flesh channels\, the performers transmit myriads of stories\, embodying a web of possibilities where everything can coexist. Because everything is transitory\, fleeting\, and forges a sensory experience where the sensitive configuration shapes a ritual of cohabitation and decompartmentalization. This work inspired by the density and complexity of human structure\, explores its entrails\, its thought processes\, its energy and its life force. \nPROGRAM

SUMMARY:The Liberated Planet Studio
DESCRIPTION:The Liberated Planet Studio (LPS) is a free Saturday workshop series for artists and activists interested in ecological and movement research at the intersections of social and environmental justice. Fourteen local and visiting artists\, activists and academics will lead workshops. The project’s many collaborators will come together to experiment with socio-ecological concepts and collective movement practices. The LPS seeks to mobilize discourse about the intersections of environmental and social exploitation\, human and animal experience and intercultural planetary struggles for liberation from the extractive logics of colonial capitalism. A guiding question is: “What would a liberated planet look like? And how might we achieve this together?”

SUMMARY:Hip-hop Freestyle with Salomon Mpondo-Dicka
DESCRIPTION:The workshop will start from the participants’ own techniques\, practices and approaches to build the foundations for your own freestyle. Different aspects of freestyle hip-hop will be explored\, through exercises and short basic choreographic phrases\, both solo and in groups. Then participants will experiment with how fluidity\, dissociation and slowness break down into several forms to feed our vocabulary. Finally the workshop will focus on the assimilation of this new material to deliver a personal freestyle creation. \nFor professional and emerging dancers working in all genres – hip-hop experience is not required.

SUMMARY:Smail Kanouté/ Compagnie Vivons!
DESCRIPTION:Smail Kanouté is a French-Malian dancer\, choreographer\, film maker\, visual artist and designer based in Paris. Echoing the hashtag #Never21 coined by the Black Lives Matter movement\, Never Twenty One pays tribute to the young Black men who have been victims of gun violence in New York\, Rio de Janeiro and Johannesburg – and will never reach the age of 21. Three powerful dancers – their torsos inscribed with testimonials from the victims’ families – recount the stories of broken lives\, through ferociously intense movement which draws on krump\, popping\, contemporary dance\, baile funk and pasinho. This is an urban requiem steeped in a shamanistic heritage\, a subtle lamentation infused with energy\, poetry and humanity. \nThere will be ASL interpretation and a post-show talkback at the January 21 performance. \nPROGRAM

SUMMARY:Arash Khakpour and Emmalena Fredriksson
DESCRIPTION:You Touch Me weaves an intricate web of duets within an ensemble of people who grew up far from here – and far from each other. Using dance and text\, their encounters investigate notions of ‘self’ and ‘other’\, cultural identity\, race and gender. Six virtuosic performers dance\, entertain\, question and challenge each other\, touching on universal themes from togetherness\, ageing and love\, to climate change and migration. Moving between the political and the poetic\, the provocative and the abstract\, seriousness and silliness\, the work attempts to feel and reveal this moment in time. \nPost-show artist talkback December 9. \nPROGRAM \nSUBSCRIBE TO THE SERIES

SUMMARY:Corporeal Imago
DESCRIPTION:Brought together while performing with Cirque du Soleil\, choreographers Gabrielle Martin and Jeremiah Hughes formed Corporeal Imago (Ci) to explore the intersection of aerial acrobatics\, contemporary dance\, and visual theatre. Throe explores our interdependence in an inhospitable world where our existence is at the mercy of external circumstance. Featuring six powerful performers\, three aerial ropes\, and a soundscape of cosmic noise\, this new work underscores our vulnerability in a universe of chaos\, while highlighting the resilience and hope in collectivity. Throe continues to push the boundaries of aerial dance\, blurring the space between floor- and air-based movement to create a compellingly kinetic and visually arresting world. \nPost-show artist talkback November 18. \nSUBSCRIBE TO THE SERIES

SUMMARY:Shion Skye Carter
DESCRIPTION:Residuals (住み・墨) draws visual\, sonic\, and physical influences from Japanese calligraphy. Dynamic brushstrokes inform Carter’s movement as she dances among sheets of translucent paper\, evoking an abstracted memory of her Japanese grandparents’ rural home. Reliving these memories sparks a journey of self-discovery\, where the layers of her identity begin to unfurl. The performance also includes the premiere of a short solo\, choreographed by Ziyian Kwan\, commissioned and performed by emerging dance artist Juolin Lee. Entitled Daydream Shadow\, the work is at tone poem that captures Kwan’s vivid imagery in tandem with Lee’s physical prowess. \nPost-show artist talkback November 5.

SUMMARY:VanVogueJam
DESCRIPTION:Ballroom culture emerged in the 1960s\, birthed from Black\, Latinx\, Trans and Queer communities\, and has exploded into a countercultural phenomenon. Ballroom’s many categories include Vogue – a highly stylized competitive form which demands symmetry\, precision and grace – and its spirit of joyful extravagance is rooted in defiant resistance to oppression. Curated by VVJ founder Ralph Escamillan\, the program will feature local performers bringing their own work from the runway to the stage\, while honouring the history of Ballroom Culture: Posh Gvasalia Basquiat (Ralph Escamillan)\, Mother Ivy Andromeda (Ivy Wilson) and Phoenix 007 (Juan Alcuitas Imperial). \nPhoto by Matt Korinek

SUMMARY:Compagnie d’Autres Cordes – Franck Vigroux
DESCRIPTION:An internationally acclaimed director\, composer and multidisciplinary artist\, Franck Vigroux’s work defies categorization\, creating a dazzling universe where music\, sound\, dance\, and video intersect. Forêt evokes a crossing\, a dreamlike passage from one place or state of being to another: in psychology\, the forest represents the subconscious. Dancer Nina Berclaz undertakes a mesmerising inner and physical journey\, as the forest shifts and transforms around her. Hypnotic butoh-inflected movement\, stunning projections and an electroacoustic score\, performed live by Vigroux\, immerse us in a world of beauty where time seems suspended\, creating an extraordinary sensory experience. \nPost-show artist talkback October 21. \nPROGRAM \nSUBSCRIBE TO THE SERIES

SUMMARY:A Somatic Approach to Teaching Dance
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to set up a dance environment that invites students to integrate a body-mind connection and engage in process-based learning. Discover how to guide and cue students so they can dive deeper into their personal sensing experience and take agency for their own embodied learning. Rather than teach dance through a ‘watch and do’ method (outer oriented)\, learn how to guide students through a ‘sense and experience’ method (inner oriented). This workshop is part theoretical and part practical. \nPart 1\, Theory / Discussion: What is a somatic approach to teaching dance\, and how can we set up a dance environment that supports process-based learning? \nPart 2\, Practical: Integrating methods and exercises into the classroom to engage students to deepen their sensing experience and body-mind connection and learning to move beyond habitual patterns of movement to find ‘the new’. \nBring notebook and wear clothes you can move in.\nFor dance teachers and artists (of all genres) who work with\, or want to work with\, teens\, adults\, and older adults. \nEnquiries: 604 606 6416 members[at]thedancecentre.ca \nPlease mention any accessibility needs on registration\, and we will try to accommodate everyone.
