SUMMARY:Workshop with Mélanie Demers\, MAYDAY
DESCRIPTION:Designed to allow participants to familiarize themselves with the curiosities and priorities of Mélanie Demers\, this workshop is a true immersion in the MAYDAY universe. It will provide tools to explore the questions and intuitions that permeate the company’s repertoire. It will retrace the path that leads from the quivering of an idea to the deployment of a reality. Body work\, heart work\, voice work\, actor work… Creation at MAYDAY is like an equation with multiple variables\, impossible to solve without embracing the unknown. \nThis workshop is designed for professional dancers and students in their final year of training.

SUMMARY:MAYDAY
DESCRIPTION:An award-winning choreographer and multidisciplinary artist based in Montreal\, Mélanie Demers dives into the political and the poetic with audacious works which fuse dance\, theatre\, literature and music with explosive effect. La Goddam Voie Lactée is her response to the harshness of the world: a pagan mass\, both celebration and challenge\, inspired by the constant mourning that marks our current age. Five charismatic women deploy their bodies\, voices and instruments in a series of visceral scenes full of raw physicality and emotion. Reflecting on the need for solidarity in the face of adversity\, this work is an exercise in self-imagination and creativity\, and a means of finding our bearings in this imperfect world. \nPROGRAM \nSeries subscriptions are no longer available for this show. SUMMARY:Livona Ellis & Rebecca Margolick
DESCRIPTION:The explosive talents of two of BC’s brightest young female artists\, Livona Ellis and Rebecca Margolick\, are showcased in an evening of solos and the world premiere of their first collaboration\, a duet titled Fortress. Ellis performs her pensive solo Unmoved\, a deeply felt response to the idea of overcoming the limitations we place on ourselves. Margolick’s solo Bunker hums with energy\, drawing on themes of memory and the shared history of previous generations of women. The program also includes two solos revived last season specially for them: Peter Bingham’s 1997 Woman Walking (away)\, danced by Ellis with exquisite simplicity and focus; and Allen Kaeja’s Trace Elements (2000) performed by Margolick\, a passionate call to learn from the mistakes of our past. \nPROGRAM \nPhotos: Faviloa Perez\, courtesy of the artist and Chris Randle

SUMMARY:Restless Productions
DESCRIPTION:Restless Productions is in an early phase of research/creation for a new interdisciplinary work. \nTheir collaborative process involves sound/movement\, brown paper (and the sound and movement of brown paper)\, architecturally informed spatial design\, and digital projection. They are exploring contingency\, possibility\, and implication through several disciplines\, in an installation-like format. \nThrough researching what it is to create work for which the “product” and venue remain speculative—digital/live\, performance/installation\, gallery/theatre—scale\, medium\, and the relationships between disciplines take on new generative qualities. Dancers and musicians occupy a speculative world of half-formed and in flux (re)presentations. This lab is a hybrid space; fertile\, adaptive\, optimistic. \nRestless recognizes this opportunity as a gift and a privilege and is looking forward to sharing their lab space with you.

SUMMARY:Dance In Vancouver: Kelly McInnes + Mahaila Patterson-O’Brien
DESCRIPTION:In Blue Space\, Kelly McInnes explores our intrinsic connection to water – the water that makes up our bodies and the world we inhabit. Full of startling imagery\, this deeply-felt solo explores tensions between the healing and the exploitation involved in our relationship to earth\, and remembers what we’re made of. \nMahaila Patterson-O’Brien’s choreography revolves around form and abstract gestures through the use of unison\, repetition\, and complex patterns\, while projections and sound reveal softer internal worlds. Danced by Eowynn Enquist and Isak Enquist\, Mid-Light: A Translucent Memory is a score-based re-imagining of a piece initially made for film and stage – an attempt to grasp an idea that is endlessly shifting and dissolving into new forms. \nFull schedule of DIV events

SUMMARY:V’ni Dansi’s Louis Riel Métis Dancers
DESCRIPTION:The rhythms and images of the Métis spirit come alive through traditional and contemporary styles of Métis dance and music in Red River Special\, which combines the Red River Jig – the national dance of the Métis – with the Orange Blossom Special\, and square dances. Traditionally\, dancers would challenge themselves to perform up to 100 “fancy steps” during the Red River Jig and the company will build on that tradition with a crescendo of steps and “crooked” fiddle tunes. This joyful performance celebrates the best of the old and the new\, and is sure to get your toes tapping!

SUMMARY:CANCELLED Mary-Louise Albert
DESCRIPTION:These performances have been cancelled due to COVID-19 but a film will be streamed online December 3-17: details. \nTwo generations of Canadian contemporary dance artists come together in an evening of vibrant solo works helmed by Mary-Louise Albert. Having retired from performing twenty years ago following a distinguished career as a dancer\, Albert is reviving three solos she commissioned from leading Canadian choreographers\, for a new generation of outstanding female performers. Peter Bingham’s Woman Walking (away) will be danced by Livona Ellis; Tedd Robinson’s (oLOS) features Vanessa Goodman; and Allen Kaeja’s Trace Elements will be performed by Rebecca Margolick. Joyful\, yearning\, vivacious\, and dramatic\, these eclectic\, beautifully crafted solos encompass a world of emotions. Albert herself returns to the stage at the age of 65 for the premiere of Empreintes\, a new solo commissioned from Serge Bennathan; and to mark emerging choreographic voices\, Ellis and Margolick will also share two of their own short solos. \nThis inspiring and deeply personal project celebrates the equal creative fusion of dancer and choreographer and pays tribute to the enduring cycle of lives in dance\, and to the continuing evolution of choreography itself. \nPROGRAM

SUMMARY:Postponed: Lee Su-Feh: The Territory Between Us
DESCRIPTION:2 years ago\, I approached Bracken Hanuse Corlett to carve me a mask in response to the conversations between us. \nThese conversations were between two artists getting to know each other and touched on our relationship to this territory\, to art\, to traditions\, and to our families and loved ones. We talked of the mask as a representation of the territory between us: me\, an immigrant and him\, Indigenous to the west coast of Turtle Island (Wuikinuxv/ Klahoose). We talked of the mask as “The Territory Between Us”. \nMy sole task on receiving the mask was simply to submit to it\, to be guided by it. \nBracken and I\, along with Justine A Chambers\, acting as choreographic assistant\, will share some of our thoughts and outcomes of this process so far. \n– Lee Su-Feh \nBirmingham Studio

SUMMARY:Postponed: Joshua Beamish/ MOVETHECOMPANY
DESCRIPTION:A sharing of work in progress from a new solo that Kirsten Wicklund is creating for Joshua Beamish. The work explores the idea of isolation: how is being alone with oneself the same as feeling alone while with others? What is a person’s desire for home or belonging rooted in? Wicklund aims to research the idea of physical undoing where new layers are revealed or set on fire. \nStay tuned for a new date to be announced. \nBirmingham Studio

SUMMARY:Bill Coleman
DESCRIPTION:In Dollhouse\, Canadian contemporary dance master and choreographer Bill Coleman portrays a figure whose whole world is literally falling in around him. Inhabiting a cluttered room which collapses and breaks at his every touch\, he shares the stage with sound artist Gordon Monahan\, whose unique score accompanies the descent into theatrical disintegration. Coleman resembles a modern fakir\, as he suffers through painful yet comical situations on his way to sonic and visual chaos. Wildly original and virtually unclassifiable\, Dollhouse encompasses tap dancing\, performance art and sound installation\, using mechanical and electronic objects\, both handmade and found\, to deliver surprising and dazzling images and rhythms. \nPost-show talkback March 13

SUMMARY:Workshop with Bill Coleman
DESCRIPTION:Bill Coleman uses a methodology of movement that he has developed through his life as a dancer.  It is the accessing of an embodied cognitive state to explore movement and approach performance and technical practice\, allowing a more embodied connection to both movement and performance. This work aims for a heightened awareness of the senses that induces both physical control and a freedom of movement\, allowing participants to access new territories of physical exploration. It focuses on shutting down the clutter of images and thoughts from the brain and the desire to direct the large muscle groups of the body\, and instead focuses on the internal waves and more erratic movement that is present in us all the time. \nBirmingham Studio

SUMMARY:Dana Michel
DESCRIPTION:The audacious and original works of Montreal-based dance artist Dana Michel have earned international attention and prestigious awards including the Jardin d’Europe Award at ImPulsTanz (Vienna)\, and the Silver Lion for Innovation in Dance at the Venice Biennale. Michel breaks through conventions with her daring choreographies\, rejecting stereotypical physicality and identity\, and creating a liberated world of shape-shifting metamorphosis\, incorporating elements ranging from sculpture and comedy\, to psychology and social commentary. Her latest creation\, CUTLASS SPRING\, delves into the mystery of the sexual self\, exploring how cultural repression and her life as a performer\, a mother\, and a lover have shaped her sexual identity. \nPost-show talkback February 7

SUMMARY:Out Innerspace Dance Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver’s Out Innerspace Dance Theatre combines virtuosic\, hyper-detailed choreography with visual magic to make engaging dance works which reflect a time of rapid change\, of ever-shifting boundaries\, and of conflict and hope. Bygones is a new work created and performed by co-directors David Raymond and Tiffany Tregarthen in collaboration with dancers Renée Sigouin\, Elya Grant and David Harvey. It considers how we are shaped by what we have overcome: and how something challenging can lead to something beautiful. Innovative movement\, ghostly architecture\, and transformed objects immerse us in a haunting universe of pseudo-things and supernatural selves existing on the margins of form and formlessness. \nPost-show talkback December 12
