SUMMARY:OURO Collective
DESCRIPTION:Known for imaginative and original works based on hip hop\, waacking\, breaking\, popping and contemporary dance\, OURO Collective teams up with experiential design studio Tangible for HAKO\, a multidisciplinary dance experience. Using inventive interactive installations\, striking visual effects and exhilarating movement for an ensemble of five virtuosic dancers\, the work reframes our relationship to technology\, and joyfully re-ignites our capacity for curiosity and play.

SUMMARY:A Surprised Body: Francesco Scavetta
DESCRIPTION:A Surprised Body is a body in a state of constant alertness\, able to surprise itself and to escape from habit and any other routine: more focused on reacting than on acting\, on removing rather than doing. The goal is to let movement cross freely through the body\, helping the dancer to build their presence on stage. \nThe physical training aims at awakening awareness and creating occasions for discoveries\, concentrating on centering and gravity\, and using exercises and games to focus on attention and reaction. Investigations of movement and structured improvisations create conceptual\, physical and mental challenges; movement materials are transformed and de-structured in several ways. \nSunday November 24\, 10am-2pm (Kraul & Strate Studio)\nMonday November 25\, 11.30am-1pm (Birmingham Studio)\nTuesday November 26\, 10am-2pm (Faris Family Studio) \nEarly Bird Registration Deadline: November 12 \nRegistration Deadline: November 22\, 9am

SUMMARY:Joshua Beamish/ MOVETHECOMPANY
DESCRIPTION:Fresh off the runaway success of @giselle\, Joshua Beamish/ MOVETHECOMPANY returns to the Vancouver stage with an ensemble of dancers from leading companies including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater\, Martha Graham Dance Company and Stephen Petronio\, in addition to Beamish himself. Saudade investigates loss\, memory\, and the deep longing for something unattainable. Six outstanding male dancers merge elegant balletic lines with street-style dynamism and drive\, conjuring up fleeting intimacies in a series of ghostly solos\, duets\, and group passages\, accompanied by a hauntingly beautiful cello score.

SUMMARY:Raven Spirit Dance
DESCRIPTION:Gathering Light follows the journey of seed to flower\, beginning with the stirrings of consciousness to the full embrace of transformation. This luminous quartet choreographed by Artistic Director Michelle Olson delves into the impulses rooted in our bodies that travel through us to find the light\, while revealing the ceremonies that support our full bloom. Performed in the round\, the work creates a distinctive sense of ritual where transformation is an experience we share with the performers.

SUMMARY:Amber Funk Barton/the response.
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by personal travels and the universe\, Amber Funk Barton’s atmospheric solo VAST is an ode to the explorer that resides in all of us\, the traveler and the dreamer who wonders what resides beyond the edge. The choreography fuses seamlessly with lighting\, sound and set design to create an evocative meditation on our limitations as human beings\, and how despite these limitations we still desire to propel ourselves forward into unknown territory.

SUMMARY:Vision Impure
DESCRIPTION:Noam Gagnon’s latest work Pathways explores the intricate push and pull of relationships impacted by urban living. Ten extraordinary dancers draw on all their strength\, speed and agility to power through the explosive choreography\, striving to find moments of emotional connection amidst the visceral intensity. Pathways questions our ability or inability to connect with one another and what makes us react more strongly to some than to others.

SUMMARY:Zahra Shahab
DESCRIPTION:Collaborating with visual artist Katie Green and dance-artists Sophia Wolfe\, Eric Cheung\, and Juolin Lee\, this research is about merging choreography\, costume\, and set design\, to generate fantastical monsters in a continual state of flux. This work seeks to illustrate the idea from feminist metaphysics that identity is continually emergent out of interdependent relationships and the force-fields of a shifting space-time. Live transformation of costume and set create a world that is intentionally unstable and unpredictable\, bending open the false solidity of our social scripts. Our interest in fantasy stems from the room that it provides for non-normative expressions of identity such as gender\, queer desire\, and unexpected evolutions of form. We are drawing inspiration from the evolving identities of the poc dance-artists in the room\, as well as animated films.\nPhoto credit: Yvonne Chew

SUMMARY:Lucy Guerin Inc
DESCRIPTION:Australian choreographer Lucy Guerin’s sharp\, elegant Split reflects the dilemmas of negotiating with oneself and others in a world of increased pressure and reduced resources. Two outstanding female dancers – one clothed and one naked – are framed by ever-diminishing dimensions of space and time with escalating intensity\, accompanied by a pulsing electronic score. Cycling through competition\, negotiation\, harmony and aggression\, this thought-provoking\, multilayered work has received numerous awards. Lucy Guerin Inc was established in Melbourne in 2002 and is regarded as one of Australia’s most fearless dance companies\, touring internationally. Guerin has also been commissioned by leading organizations including Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project\, Rambert\, and Chunky Move. \nPost-show talkback October 17

SUMMARY:Focus Cia De Dança
DESCRIPTION:Founded in Rio de Janeiro in 2000 by Brazilian choreographer Alex Neoral\, Focus Cia De Dança has found huge audience success at home and abroad with its surging physicality and poetic depth. Neoral’s artistic approach is rooted in Brazilian tradition but is fiercely modern\, blending ballet and contemporary techniques. Still Reich comprises four dynamic works choreographed to the propulsive music of the iconic American composer Steve Reich. Pathways is built on intricate duets; Trilas explores how everything can change in a moment; Wood Steps is inspired by nomadic life; and Keta shows the dancers working at maximum power and velocity. Packed with complex partnering and sculpted shapes\, the fluent choreography drives a celebration of movement\, sound\, and rhythm. \nPost-show talkback October 3
