SUMMARY:lossy bodies with Company 605
DESCRIPTION:  \nLisa Mariko Gelley and Josh Martin of Company 605 guide participants through movement vocabulary and methodologies from their stage work lossy (2024)\, alongside discussion of their evolving concept of the “video body” — a digitally mediated understanding of the body that has threaded through their creations since their first work AUDIBLE (2009). \nAnchored by the notion of “lossy”\, a term suggesting compression\, degradation and reformatting\, the session follows the makers’ creative inquiry into what is lost\, abstracted\, remade or newly enabled as physical bodies encounter and are translated across new socio-technological conditions and increasingly unfixed realities. As choreography becomes captured\, stored\, replicated\, and re-rendered through machinic systems\, what happens to authorship\, indexicality\, and the authority of the live body? What new processes\, aesthetics\, and creative possibilities emerge when perceptions of real or simulated begin to blur or collapse? \nThrough collective dialogue and guided physical exploration\, Lisa and Josh offer a case study and reflection on their own experience and artistic trajectory navigating the digital mitigation of bodies\, tracing how ideas become embodied in choreographic propositions\, how questions generate form\, and how futurity has quietly guided their work. Exploring how notions of source\, representation\, and meaning shift alongside advancing technologies and cultural imaginaries\, participants are invited to situate their own creative processes within this terrain\, reflecting on where and how they are making from now. \nCapacity is very limited\, early registration strongly advised. \n Contact members[at]thedancecentre[dot]ca to register.\nRegistration Deadline: March 30

SUMMARY:Ame Henderson Projects + Provincija
DESCRIPTION:Collaborating across borders and disciplines\, Canadian choreographer Ame Henderson and Croatian director Matija Ferlin are known for their playfully rigorous conceptual performances. In this new duet\, they play with light and darkness to explore the felt experience of endings – political\, social and personal ones. The “snap to black” and the revealed tableaux that follow become a motif exposing the impossibility of controlling the narrative. From endless endings gradually emerges the feeling of a beginning.

SUMMARY:Idan Cohen/ Ne. Sans Opera & Dance
DESCRIPTION:  \nMeticulously crafted and suffused with musicality\, Idan Cohen’s exquisite creations emerge from the intersection of opera\, music\, and contemporary dance. This performance will feature two works. About Time is a duet set to the haunting piano music of Philip Glass\, a powerful response to a fractured world where the overwhelming flood of information becomes a vehicle for conflict rather than connection; it seeks a path towards human compassion and understanding. The program also includes a sneak peek of excerpts from Cohen’s new work in development Bach Dances\, which reimagines Bach’s famous solo Cello Suites through dance.

SUMMARY:Justine A. Chambers
DESCRIPTION:The Brutal Joy unfurls Black line dancing and sartorial expression as intellectual discourse\, reverie\, and devotion to Black-living. Created by the acclaimed Vancouver-based choreographer Justine A. Chambers\, the work is rooted in her childhood memories and is a collaboration with her Black matrilineal heritage. It centers dance and fashion as living counter-archives\, and considers how movement and personal style are tools for self-determination and the reclamation of Black humanitarian value. \nA dazzling scored improvisation for dance\, lighting\, and sound\, The Brutal Joy draws from the Electric Slide and Black dandyism as embodied knowledge sources for self-actualization in the present through a dance of future possibilities. \nPost-show artist talkback February 6 \nPROGRAM

SUMMARY:Plastic Orchid Factory/James Gnam
DESCRIPTION:Two people move through midlife\, tracing what was and what could be. \nIn Catching Up to the Future of Our Past\, Natalie LeFebvre Gnam and James Gnam explore time as something elastic—stretching between memory and possibility. Inside a Mary Quant–inspired\, retro-futurist bubble\, their duet plays with the weight and lightness of time passing. \nThe piece sits where nostalgia and anticipation meet\, tracing how time stretches between what we remember and what we imagine. Every gesture becomes a reminder of how the past shapes what’s ahead—and how the future reshapes what we remember. \nPost-show artist talkback January 30 \nFuture Past x Slow Social Feb 1\, 2pm: register \nPROGRAM

SUMMARY:Action at a Distance/Vanessa Goodman
DESCRIPTION:WAIL is crafted as a poem for our present moment\, weaving generative sound and movement together to capture the essence of shared experience in a time marked by dissonance. Delving into the intricate dance of navigating joy within community\, six dance artists create a living score\, intertwining physical and sonic compositions. The work draws inspiration from botanical distortions and auditory illusions to forge a sense of intimacy between humanity and the natural world\, ultimately celebrating resilience in the face of chaos. \nThis transformative and timely world premiere sees Vanessa Goodman\, an award-winning West Coast choreographer who tours internationally\, continue to probe the interconnectedness of bodies\, technology and ecosystems. \nPost-show artist talkback January 27

SUMMARY:Cherish Menzo / Frascati Producties
DESCRIPTION:Through a collision of physical performance\, hip hop visual language\, and the slowed\, distorted flow of chopped-and-screwed sound\, JEZEBEL reclaims the hyper-sexualized image of the “video vixen” that defined hip hop’s golden age. Once framed through a male gaze that fetishized and vilified Black femininity\, the vixen now steps into her own frame—stretching the image until its artifice becomes her authorship. \nDrawing from the glossy aesthetics of MTV-era music videos and the syrupy deceleration of Southern hip hop remix culture\, this electrifying solo work deconstructs the myths of the “hip hop honey\,” refracting her through feminist\, racial\, and cultural awakenings. What emerges is a portrait of a woman both muse and maker: unapologetic and self-possessed. With a bass-heavy soundscape and arresting physicality\, JEZEBEL asks—who gets to look\, and who gets to define what they see?

SUMMARY:Ileanna Sophia Cheladyn
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Dance Dialogues – a three-part series of talks where artists and scholars delve into the ideas\, practices\, and provocations that shape contemporary dance and art-making. Engage with thought-provoking perspectives in an open space for critical inquiry and nuanced reflection. \nIleanna Sophia Cheladyn got lost in a year of ethnographic fieldwork in the dance community she’s called home for over a decade: the indie/experimental/contemporary/?? dance world of Vancouver. \nNow\, she fields questions from the field. Invisible forces\, shifting relations\, and the subtle ways bodies register change. A field can be land\, a branch of knowledge\, a zone of influence\, or the space where a force takes hold. Here\, it’s all of these at once. \nThis is a talk that thinks through fields that think about (other) fields\, noticing how one field’s logic brushes against another’s. Be it the fields of anthropology and dance\, or the fields of her gestures and ours. Each contact sparks a different choreography of bodies\, bodyings\, things to think with\, and ways of knowing. \n

SUMMARY:Eric Cheung
DESCRIPTION:The recent Iris Garland Award-winning emerging choreographer and interdisciplinary artist Eric Cheung premieres his debut full-length work\, Contra. Set within an ethereal world\, Contra merges dance with interactive technologies\, sculpting multi-laser projections and a sound-resonant water installation into an ever-changing environment. \nBringing together an exceptional group of artists and collaborators from diverse disciplines\, the work features three distinct performers—Kinui Oiwa\, Tegvaran Sooch\, and Eric Cheung—whose backgrounds span Ballet\, Contemporary\, Street Dance\, and abstract movement forms. Together\, they craft singular characters that evolve through shifting layers of noise and precise low frequencies composed by Matthew Tomkinson. \nPROGRAM

SUMMARY:Katria Phothong-McKinnon
DESCRIPTION:Impetus is an interdisciplinary installation that explores identity\, digital existence and cultural preservation through the meeting points of classical Thai dance\, Voguing\, w*acking and new media. At the heart of the work are two 16 x 16 x16 LED matrix cubes: one manufactured\, embodying a digital record of movement\, the other hand soldered\, symbolizing presence beyond what is seen and the hidden labour behind technology. Together\, they aim to reveal and explore how cultural and human experiences are fragmented\, mediated\, and constrained within digital and non digital systems. \nVisitors are welcome to drop in at any time and stay as long as they wish. The installation runs on a 10-minute loop. Capacity in the space is limited. Depending on attendance\, there may be a short wait. \nArtist Talk with Katria Phothong-McKinnon facilitated by Sophia Mai Wolfe Wednesday November 19 | 7.30-8.30pm.
