SUMMARY:Action at a Distance/Vanessa Goodman
DESCRIPTION:WAIL is crafted as a poem for our present moment\, weaving generative sound and movement together to capture the essence of shared experience in a time marked by dissonance. Delving into the intricate dance of navigating joy within community\, six dance artists create a living score\, intertwining physical and sonic compositions. The work draws inspiration from botanical distortions and auditory illusions to forge a sense of intimacy between humanity and the natural world\, ultimately celebrating resilience in the face of chaos. \nThis transformative and timely world premiere sees Vanessa Goodman\, an award-winning West Coast choreographer who tours internationally\, continue to probe the interconnectedness of bodies\, technology and ecosystems. \nPost-show artist talkback January 27

SUMMARY:Cherish Menzo / Frascati Producties
DESCRIPTION:Through a collision of physical performance\, hip hop visual language\, and the slowed\, distorted flow of chopped-and-screwed sound\, JEZEBEL reclaims the hyper-sexualized image of the “video vixen” that defined hip hop’s golden age. Once framed through a male gaze that fetishized and vilified Black femininity\, the vixen now steps into her own frame—stretching the image until its artifice becomes her authorship. \nDrawing from the glossy aesthetics of MTV-era music videos and the syrupy deceleration of Southern hip hop remix culture\, this electrifying solo work deconstructs the myths of the “hip hop honey\,” refracting her through feminist\, racial\, and cultural awakenings. What emerges is a portrait of a woman both muse and maker: unapologetic and self-possessed. With a bass-heavy soundscape and arresting physicality\, JEZEBEL asks—who gets to look\, and who gets to define what they see?

SUMMARY:VIVA LA DANZA
DESCRIPTION:VIVA LA DANZA is not your typical Mexican dance show — it’s a bold celebration of culture\, creativity\, and community. Now in its third year\, this vibrant event features rarely seen traditional dances\, brought to life by the Mexican Dance Ensemble of Vancouver under the artistic direction of choreographer Lourdes Ruiz. This year\, we’ve chosen the Faris Family Studio at The Dance Centre to create a more intimate and immersive experience — with very limited seating. With live music\, stunning costumes\, and powerful storytelling\, the evening honors not just Mexican identity\, but the passion\, discipline\, and friendships that grow through dance.

SUMMARY:Ileanna Sophia Cheladyn
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Dance Dialogues – a three-part series of talks where artists and scholars delve into the ideas\, practices\, and provocations that shape contemporary dance and art-making. Engage with thought-provoking perspectives in an open space for critical inquiry and nuanced reflection. \nIleanna Sophia Cheladyn got lost in a year of ethnographic fieldwork in the dance community she’s called home for over a decade: the indie/experimental/contemporary/?? dance world of Vancouver. \nNow\, she fields questions from the field. Invisible forces\, shifting relations\, and the subtle ways bodies register change. A field can be land\, a branch of knowledge\, a zone of influence\, or the space where a force takes hold. Here\, it’s all of these at once. \nThis is a talk that thinks through fields that think about (other) fields\, noticing how one field’s logic brushes against another’s. Be it the fields of anthropology and dance\, or the fields of her gestures and ours. Each contact sparks a different choreography of bodies\, bodyings\, things to think with\, and ways of knowing. \n

SUMMARY:Katria Phothong-McKinnon
DESCRIPTION:Impetus is an interdisciplinary installation that explores identity\, digital existence and cultural preservation through the meeting points of classical Thai dance\, Voguing\, w*acking and new media. At the heart of the work are two 16 x 16 x16 LED matrix cubes: one manufactured\, embodying a digital record of movement\, the other hand soldered\, symbolizing presence beyond what is seen and the hidden labour behind technology. Together\, they aim to reveal and explore how cultural and human experiences are fragmented\, mediated\, and constrained within digital and non digital systems. \nVisitors are welcome to drop in at any time and stay as long as they wish. The installation runs on a 10-minute loop. Capacity in the space is limited. Depending on attendance\, there may be a short wait. \nArtist Talk with Katria Phothong-McKinnon facilitated by Sophia Mai Wolfe Wednesday November 19 | 7.30-8.30pm.

SUMMARY:Natalia Martineau
DESCRIPTION:How do you feel being perceived?\nDo you feel at home in your own body?\nCan you exist in an arbitrary mould? \nDance artist Natalia Martineau\, sound artist/performer Aysha Dulong and actor/sound artist Cindy Kao’s research project draws from their personal experiences navigating colonial binaries of race\, sexuality\, and gender to question what it means to perform the self and how we may be perceived as ‘other’ when entering new spaces. The artists will share and discuss their research in this informal showing.

SUMMARY:Company 605 + The Human Expression
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver’s Company 605 and Singapore’s The Human Expression (T.H.E) Dance Company join forces for a thrilling new international creation. Envisioned and choreographed by Anthea Seah (T.H.E) and Josh Martin (Company 605)\, Sloth Canon brings together performers and collaborators from both cities to seek out what it means to build and to break. \nA fragmented team of five is determined to “keep it together” as their bodies are propelled by unnatural momentum\, and their bubble of fantasy drifts towards the spike of reality. What happens when imagination exceeds capacity? When ambitions threaten to burst under their own weight? When the sin of slowness collides with the pressure to produce? Sloth Canon is hellbent on building forward – while simultaneously falling apart. \nPost-show artist talkback June 6. \nPROGRAM

SUMMARY:Y2Cali Kiki Ball
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Y2Cali Kiki Ball\, where the glamour of Beverly Hills’s rich and famous meets the wild 2000s. Designer drama\, tabloid scandals\, and iconic pop culture moments defined a generation. It’s all about money\, fame\, and messy reality TV energy—red carpet arrivals\, paparazzi chases\, and juicy drama of Hollywood’s elite. From the sun-soaked beaches of Malibu to the velvet rope exclusivity of LA’s hottest clubs\, bring looks and attitude – rich\, reckless\, and ridiculously iconic. In the 2000s\, Southern California was not just about looking at the part but about playing the game.
