SUMMARY:Gaurav Bhatti
DESCRIPTION:Working at the intersection of the North Indian classical form of Kathak and contemporary dance\, Gaurav Bhatti is known for virtuosic performances which encompass explosive energy\, dramatic complexity\, and eloquent emotion. His new solo is inspired by the life and poetry of the 18th-century Sufi mystic Bulleh Shah\, who spoke out against powerful institutions\, and advocated for tolerance at a time of violent religious strife. \nIntegrating Kathak\, Punjabi folk dances\, and Western movement forms\, Bhatti applies his distinctive contemporary sensibility to reassert Shah’s enduring message of universal love\, and pays homage to the rich artistic heritage of the Punjab. \nPost-show artist talkback March 29. \nPROGRAM

SUMMARY:Daina Ashbee
DESCRIPTION:Daina Ashbee’s radical works sit at the edge of dance and performance. Still only in her early thirties\, she has garnered major awards and critical acclaim\, and her bold\, utterly unique creations are shown all over the world. We learned a lot at our own funeral is a compelling new work which probes the notion of death. Enveloping the audience in a potent sense of ritual\, it evokes a battle with the self: the dancer challenges gravity\, resists the ground\, overcomes precarious balances. Finally\, only the echo of the body\, of its strength and fragility\, remains. \nPost-show artist talkback February 7. \nPROGRAM

DESCRIPTION:Hermit crabs don’t have shells. Instead they improvise homes from objects that catch their eye\, then migrate to new and more hospitable residences as they outgrow their makeshift dwellings. Drawing inspiration from the resourceful adaptability of these enigmatic creatures\, Habitat presents a hypnotic meditation on resettlement and the search for home. \nDetails about online viewing here. \nPresented by PuSh International Performing Arts Festival\, Innerfish and Latincouver

SUMMARY:A Surprised Body: Workshop with Francesco Scavetta
DESCRIPTION:Francesco Scavetta offers a personal approach to contemporary dance\, based on release technique and contact improvisation and influenced by his practice of Tai Chi Chuan\, that links a deep transformation of the body to delicate “poetics of movement”. \nA surprised body is in a constantly alerted state\, able to surprise itself\, escaping from a habitual daily body and any kind of routine. A body more focused on reacting\, than on acting. \nThroughout a structured score of exercises combining floor work\, hands-on exercises\, tai chi chuan and movement sequences\, the work focuses on centering and gravity; on awakening the internal and external supports\, while allowing isolation in the limbs and flow in the movement. The physical training aims at generating awareness and at creating occasions for discoveries.

SUMMARY:Action at a Distance/Vanessa Goodman
DESCRIPTION:Soft Currents is inspired by murmurations – enormous groups of starlings that swirl across the sky in shape-shifting clouds. This collaborative creation brings together 12 dance artists and a original light and sound score to explore the idea of collective responsibility. Working with headphones\, the artists respond to text co-authored by Goodman and the group that only they can hear. The audience experiences a performance full of spontaneous eruptions\, compositions and delights\, alternating between collective unison and individual focus. \nThis special DIV edition of Soft Currents will have a site-specific component\, moving through different spaces at Scotiabank Dance Centre and culminating in the theatre for a post-show social gathering with DJ Brady Marks. \nAccessibility: The work is built with accessibility in mind. There are multiple sites within the building where it can be viewed that are wheelchair-accessible and most have some limited seating for anyone that needs it. \nPROGRAM

SUMMARY:Lee Su-Feh
DESCRIPTION:Touch Me Hold Me Let Me Go is\nan algorithm for dancing with the planet\nan algorithm for dancing with your beloved\nan algorithm for dancing from enough-ness \nIt is a lecture\, a poem\, a sing-along.\nA workshop\, a recital\, a dance-party. \nIn this multi-media lecture-performance\, Lee Su-Feh talks about this algorithm\, teaches it\, performs it. SUMMARY:DIV Double Bill: FakeKnot + Ziyian Kwan/Odd Meridian
DESCRIPTION:A quick sketch of a garment\, a ‘croquis’ is often the first step towards bringing an idea into tangible reality. In Ralph Escamillan’s innovative solo\, the pencil is the body and the paper a modular canvas – dissecting the desire to imprint oneself into physical space. Central to the work is a garment constructed entirely out of paper\, inspired by the historic ball gown skirt which evokes celebration\, femininity and pomp\, as well as a type of confinement and mourning. \nCreated and performed by Ziyian Kwan\, Tendrils is the first in a series of works that that are odes to artists whose inspirational writings\, teachings\, and practices are living toolkits for survival and hope. Kwan brings her signature imagery and shape-shifting presence to a solo that relays and responds to her correspondence with the late Canadian dance icon Tedd Robinson\, performed alongside items from his creative archives that were gifted as part of 10 Gates Dancing’s Multiples Project. Tendrils is medicine for the healer in each of us. \nBook any two 8pm performances and save 20%. \nPROGRAM

SUMMARY:Company 605
DESCRIPTION:lossy is about an inability to take it all with us. The performers are bodies at a loss\, grasping for an anchor\, and haunted by the ghostly traces of lost futures. Shifting between bursts of intense fragmented movement and moments of stillness\, driven by the pulsating score\, they capture the essence of our uncertain times. This compelling work represents a warped ritual of transcendence – a carefree conjuring of a shiny new future ‘us’\, and a grieving for what the future may no longer hold\, once we finally arrive. \nBook any two 8pm performances and save 20%. \nPROGRAM

Seeking both discomfort and safety\, they draw inspiration from the matriarchs in their lives\, building toward a deeper understanding of themselves. \nAbout Time continues Ne. Sans Opera & Dance’s Artistic Director Idan Cohen’s journey through Philip Glass’ solo piano etudes\, performed live by award-winning pianist Leslie Dala\, featuring dancers Will Jessup and Benjamin DeFaria. Glass’ music captures an abstraction sense of time\, telling a story without words through his minimalistic\, crystalline rhythms— timeless yet strikingly relevant.

SUMMARY:Rebecca Margolick
DESCRIPTION:Catenary is a collaborative work from choreographer Rebecca Margolick and violinist Hannah Epperson. A catenary is the curve that an idealized hanging rope assumes under its own weight when supported at its two ends. This is the foundational concept for the piece\, which explores the centres of symmetry between the disciplines of music and dance\, and between the poles of antagonism that define our social\, economic and political reality. Catenary fuses\, upsets and subverts the relationship between live music\, dance\, and futuristic sound design. \nThe artists will share an excerpt\, and lead a conversation with the audience about the process.
