DESCRIPTION:Sky Dancers emerged from a year-long gathering of six outstanding Bharata Natyam dance artists\, who formed a unique collaborative space to explore the core elements of the form: stillness\, presence\, energy\, musicality\, ritual\, and stories. Using the framework of the Dakini (Sky Dancer)\, a Buddhist symbol of the dynamic play of energy in the universe\, the choreography expresses both the dancers’ personal voices and the rich traditions and meditative practices that have emerged from India. \nConceived and directed by Anusha Fernando\, Sky Dancers is performed by Arno Kamolika\, Kiruthika Rathanaswami\, Malavika Santhosh\, Ashvini Sundaram and Sujit Vaidya\, joined on stage by musicians and meditators/chanters. \nPost-show artist talkback October 5.

DESCRIPTION:Agrimony walks the edge between spellbinding contemporary dance and an evocative concert. Co-created by the talented young choreographer Sophie Dow in collaboration with composer/multi-instrumentalist Laura Reznek\, the work pays tribute to agrimonia eupatoria. In traditional plant medicine\, this small yellow flower is a catalyst for honesty\, dissolving masks of fear and pain to unveil our truest selves. \nThe fluent choreography\, expressively performed by Dow and three dancers\, has an intimate connection to the score\, which is played live on stage by Reznek and four musicians. DESCRIPTION:In Salmon Cycle\, choreographer Julia Taffe and her Aeriosa team work technical rigging magic to evoke a beautiful floating journey into the mysterious underwater environs of Pacific Salmon. This piece contemplates and celebrates the extraordinary lives of five keystone species which are foundational to terrestrial\, aquatic and cultural ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest. \nCome join Aeriosa dancers Cara Siu\, Meghan Goodman\, Alex Tam and Juan Duarte for a 15-minute performance excerpt from Salmon Cycle that Aeriosa will also be presenting at the San Francisco Aerial Arts Festival August 16 and 17\, 2024. \nFollowing the excerpt the dancers will share a movement sketch exploring how Salmon Cycle’s counterweight rigging design combines with contact improv to magnify movement trajectories. \nTo complete the showing\, artistic director Julia Taffe will lead a conversation with the dancers and the audience about the Salmon Cycle creative process. \nMasks are welcome\, and will be available for audience members at the door. \nGenerously supported by The Dance Centre (www.thedancecentre.ca) through Special Projects and Partnerships

DESCRIPTION:Catenary is a collaborative work from choreographer Rebecca Margolick and violinist Hannah Epperson. A catenary is the curve that an idealized hanging rope assumes under its own weight when supported at its two ends. This is the foundational concept for the piece\, which explores the centres of symmetry between the disciplines of music and dance\, and between the poles of antagonism that define our social\, economic and political reality. Catenary fuses\, upsets and subverts the relationship between live music\, dance\, and futuristic sound design. \nThe artists will share an excerpt\, and lead a conversation with the audience about the process.

From the initial idea of a work\, through creation and presentation\, learn how to effectively describe your work for grants\, marketing materials\, applications and your audience. Company artists Juan Duarte (they/them) and Kiera Hill (she/her) will then teach excerpts of the work\, providing their perspective as performers in the piece. This collaborative experience will afford participants the opportunity to ask questions and receive personalized coaching. \nExperienced dancers from all backgrounds are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Ramanenjana is a docufiction performance about a mysterious ‘dance epidemic’ which swept Madagascar for four months in 1863\, bringing thousands of people to the streets to dance nonstop to the magnetic music of the drums. DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary artist Nellie Gossen’s Returns is an imaginative convergence of dance\, labour and garment fabrication: an innovative experiment and month-long artistic enquiry into the standard 30-day retail return policy. \nGarments of all kinds are purchased and brought to the studio where they are carefully disassembled\, and their materials reimagined into new forms. Gossen works alongside dance artist Erika Mitsuhashi\, clothing artist Jaewoo Kang and visual artist tone puorro to construct an ever-shifting landscape of garment constellations\, sculptural configurations\, and unfolding movement scores.
