The 30th annual Wreck Beach Butoh performance workshop will take place July 8 – 21, 2024 on the traditional unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples – the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations also known as Vancouver BC Canada.
The workshop consists of nine days of rehearsal starting at 9:30am where participants learn a new movement score that incorporates butoh methods of changing time and space at Kokoro’s own KW Studios (111 West Hastings). We then go to Wreck Beach (Squamish: Ts’at’lhm) for an undress rehearsal where participants discover the challenges and joys of dancing in the ocean and on the beach.
On July 20 @ 11:15am and July 21 @ 12pm, we perform on Vancouver’s largest stage with set, lighting, and sound by Mother Nature. No previous dance experience is necessary, but you must be over 18 years of age to participate. The performances on July 20th and 21st are in the nude, rain or shine. Conditions on the beach are primal and challenging.
Attendance of all classes and rehearsals (7 hrs./day with 1 hr. lunch break) is mandatory and all participants must commit to participating in the performances. For first-time participants there is a $472.50 (taxes incl) workshop fee. For returning past-participants, the workshop registration fee is $32.00 plus a sliding scale workshop fee from $0 – $472.50 (taxes incl).
