April 2025: Akshaya Surve
Who is Akshaya Surve in a sentence?
I am a Kathak artist, delving into the roots of ancient dance techniques while using them as inspiration to create new and innovative artwork.
Tell us a bit about your work and practice.
When I set out to create new work, I focus deeply on my regular practice. It is through consistent, disciplined practice that creativity naturally emerges. As I immerse myself in the repetition of movements, rhythms, and expressions, new ideas begin to take shape organically. The process of refining technique and exploring nuances often leads to unexpected inspirations, unlocking fresh choreographic possibilities.
How long have you been dancing?
I began my dance journey at the age of five, starting with folk dance, which introduced me to the joy of movement and expression. However, my formal training in Kathak began much later, at the age of 15. My first Kathak teacher, Guru Shridhar Parkar, laid the foundation for my learning, teaching me the fundamental principles of the art form. Under his guidance, I not only learned the technical basics of Kathak but also developed a deep sense of discipline, which became instrumental in shaping my future as a dancer.
After building a strong foundation, I continued my Kathak training under my second teacher, Guru Mayur Vaidya. This phase of my journey was transformative, allowing me to explore the depth and intricacy of Kathak on a much deeper level. It was during this time that I made the conscious decision to pursue dance as a profession. To further solidify my knowledge and expertise, I completed my bachelor’s degree in Kathak from the All India Music University Board.
I consider myself a perpetual student, the beauty of this journey lies in its continuous growth, where learning never truly ends but only expands, shaping me both as an artist and as an individual.
How does dance fit into your life currently – are there any upcoming projects you want to share with us?
After moving to Canada, I felt a strong desire to share my passion for Kathak and create a community that could celebrate and nurture this beautiful art form. With this vision, I founded Akshaya Kathak Academy in 2023. At Akshaya Kathak Academy, we follow a well-structured curriculum and ensure each student receives personalized attention. The training encompasses all aspects of Kathak, including practical applications, theoretical knowledge, intricate footwork, storytelling through abhinaya (expressions), and an understanding of the rich heritage of ancient Indian history. To maintain high standards of learning, students are individually assessed at each level by qualified examiners, ensuring steady progress and mastery of the art form. I am currently working on a project titled “Draupadi,” which I will be performing as part of the 12 Min Max program by The Dance Centre. This opportunity is particularly special to me, as I have been eagerly waiting for the chance to present my work under The Dance Centre’s platform.
How would you describe dance’s impact on your life?
Dance is a sacred space where I find stillness within movement and connect deeply with myself. From my childhood, dance has been an integral part of my life, shaping my identity and guiding my personal and artistic growth. It is more than just an art form; it is a means of self-discovery, reflection, and expression. Dance is a meditative practice that grounds me and keeps me connected to my true self.
What three core values drive your engagement with dance?
Do you have a particular practice that you carry out each day or have you implemented new practices over these last few years?
Slow Practice for Clarity – I intentionally slow down my movements to focus on precision, control, and clarity in my dance.
Being Aware of My Body and Thoughts – Mindful awareness is an essential part of my dance practice. I listen to my body, understanding its strengths and limitations, and avoid forcing movements that may cause strain.
What would you say are the most significant benefits for you in being a Dance Centre member?
After moving to Canada, I was able to continue my dance journey thanks to The Dance Centre. Becoming a member of The Dance Centre provided me with the space, resources, and encouragement I needed to keep growing as an artist. It was here that I found the support to establish my own Kathak Academy, creating a platform to share my passion and knowledge with others. It offers a safe and inclusive atmosphere, allowing dancers from diverse backgrounds to flourish. The supportive and helpful staff have played a key role in making this journey smooth.
