Who is Punit Singh in a sentence?
Punit is an interdisciplinary artist based in Vancouver, Canada, draws from extensive training in contemporary and street dance, as well as acting/theatre. He synthesizes knowledge from diverse career paths and lived experiences to create and inspire.
Tell us a bit about your work and practice.
Utilizing my expertise in dance/theatre, engineering, and mental health, I aim to produce original works addressing mental health and contemporary societal issues, striving for a better future. My goal is to bring joy and fulfillment to the community as a whole through meaningful artistic expression.
How long have you been dancing?
With a decade of dance experience, my journey began with breaking, inspired by watching Redbull BC One and SYTYCD. Over time, I developed a fondness for contemporary movement and, more recently, street dance.
How does dance fit into your life currently?
Currently, I’m dedicated to attending classes taught by teachers that inspire me while also working on several personal projects. I’m honored to be an artist in residence for the Re-Centering/Margins residency with Dance West Network. Additionally, I’m engaged in researching my own project titled ‘Entangled,’ which explores the fusion of dance and AI animation.
How would you describe dance’s impact on your life?
Dance has profoundly impacted my life, teaching me invaluable life lessons and granting me a healthy body for which I’m deeply grateful. It serves as my creative outlet, enabling introspection, joy, laughter, and fun. Most importantly, through dance, I’ve found a wonderful community of friends who enrich my life. I’m immensely thankful for this gift.
What three core values drive your engagement with dance?
Curiosity, Collaboration and Fulfillment
Do you have a particular practice that you carry out each day or have you implemented new practices over these last few years?
I maintain my fitness through morning and bedtime workout and stretch routines. In dance, I prioritize regular sessions with friends and community, recognizing the significance of exchange in honing improvisational skills. I trust my body to guide my movement each day, allowing for natural expression and exploration.
What would you say are the most significant benefits for you in being a Dance Centre member?
Community is at the core of my values, and I’ve forged meaningful connections through various events at The Dance Centre. Additionally, I’ve been fortunate to benefit from programs like the Reboot grant. The beautiful space itself serves as a constant source of inspiration, fueling my creativity and movement every time I’m there.
