This season we are thrilled to once again partner with Circuit-Est centre chorégraphique in Montreal for the Quebec-BC Residency Exchange. We caught up with Montreal performer and creator Molly Siboulet-Ryan who visits Vancouver this month as part of the program.
Briefly describe your dance career to date.
I moved to Canada to attend the School of Contemporary Dance of Montreal in 2017. After graduating, I collaborated with various collectives and choreographers as a performer such as the BEATS collective and Charlie Prince. At the same time, I began exploring my own creative process through different mediums: movement, text, photography, videography, and installations. I am currently interested in eroticism and sensuality as forms of resilience.
What prompted you to apply to the Residency Exchange program?
I had completed the first phase of my work To that First Last One in June and was searching for a residency to finish the choreography when I came across the open call. I had never been to Vancouver before, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity. I’m excited to discover the creative community here!
Tell us about what you’re planning to work on during your Vancouver visit.
I will be refining my solo To that First Last One. The piece explores the gradual deconstruction of a sensual identity through movement, text, and light. During my time in Vancouver, I plan to focus on clarifying certain transitions that are still a bit unclear and further developing the dramaturgy of the work. My artistic advisor, Lucy Fandel, will also join me during the final week so that we can finalize the piece together.
If you didn’t have a career in dance, what might you be doing?
I’d be a princess ✨
What is your next project?
In October 2024, I began a new multidisciplinary research project combining digital art, performance and live music. My aim is to develop a durational performance to be presented in art galleries. I’m excited to further explore this new project!
